Course Introduction

The course Anti-Doping in Sports is a four-week open course (every week two hours online), offered by the Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland.

This course is designed and delivered by renowned experts in the fields of sports law, anti-doping, and compliance. It is an open online course available to anyone interested in understanding and addressing the challenges of doping in sports. The course is particularly suitable for sports administrators, club managers, young lawyers, compliance officers, athletes, coaches, and leaders of sports federations and organizations, among others.

Course Content

The course covers specific topics on anti-doping in sports, including: introduction to the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) and its key principles, legal responsibilities of athletes and sports organizations, testing and investigation procedures, Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), sanctions and adjudication processes, anti-doping education and prevention programs, ethical challenges, emerging technologies in doping, collaboration with National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs), compliance audits, and future trends in anti-doping.

Course Structure

Week 1: Introduction to Anti-Doping in Sports (2 hours)

• Overview of the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) and its significance.
• Key principles: strict liability, prohibited substances, and athlete responsibilities.
• Roles and responsibilities of stakeholders (athletes, clubs, federations).
• Prohibited Substances and Methods List: understanding classifications and updates

Week 2: Legal Framework and Compliance (2 hours)

• Anti-doping laws and regulations (international and national levels).
• The role of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in anti-doping disputes.
• Anti-doping compliance and legal enforcement mechanisms.
• Athlete rights and the appeals process.

Week 3: Testing, Investigations, and Sanctions (2 hours)

• Overview of testing procedures (in-competition and out-of-competition).
• Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs): purpose, application, and approval.
• Managing anti-doping rule violations (ADRV): types and consequences.
• Investigation processes and sanctioning athletes/clubs for violations.

Week 4: Practical Implementation and Future Challenges (2 hours)

• Developing anti-doping policies within organizations.
• Adjudication processes: National and CAS-level hearings..
• Addressing challenges posed by new doping methods and technologies.
• Collaboration between organizations to strengthen anti-doping measures.

Accreditation & Certification

The Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland (ALSS) is an international education institution  that  offers  continuing  education,  further  education,  and  post  graduate advanced  education  courses,  workshops  and  programs  focusing  on  advanced  studies in Leadership and Management. The ALSS also offers short courses that are not credit- bearing, and do not lead to formal qualifications. All attendees who attend all the four presentations for the Anti-Doping in Sports course will be awarded certificates of successful attendance by the ALSS.
