Leadership in Sports Management

Course Introduction

Leadership in Sports Management is a four-week open course (every Thursday, two hours online), offered by the Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland. The course is designed and delivered by recognized experts in this field.

It is being offered as an open online course and can be attended by anyone who is, or aspires to get, involved in the industry of sports – including sports administrators, government officials working in sports governance, executives in national and international federations, club presidents, directors, and managers, among others.

The course covers key topics in sports management, including the strategies for operational excellence and team management, building sustainable financial practices and securing sponsorships, fostering innovation and leveraging technology to enhance performance and engagement, promoting ethical leadership and compliance, ensuring community outreach and development, and addressing global trends and challenges to future-proof sports organizations.

Week 1: Introduction to Sports Management (2 hours)

Overview of sports club structures and roles.
Key principles of sports management.
Strategic planning and goal setting for clubs
Leadership styles and their impact on sports clubs.
Case studies: Effective leaders in sports organizations
Building and managing effective teams.

Week 2: Financial Management and Sponsorship Acquisition (2 hours)

Leadership in financial planning and resource allocation.
Diversifying revenue streams: Sponsorships, grants, and partnerships.
Revenue streams: Membership fees, ticket sales, and fundraising.
Financial sustainability: Managing costs and reinvestment
Scaling operations while maintaining quality.
Risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

Week 3: Legal and Compliance Issues in Sports Clubs and Sports Organizations (2 hours)

Overview of legal obligations for sports organizations and sports clubs.
Contract management (players, coaches, sponsors).
Ethical leadership and compliance (safeguarding, anti-doping).
Risk management: Insurance, liability, and dispute resolution.

Week 4: Leading with Vision and Innovation (2 hours)

Innovation and Technology in Sports Management.
The role of digital tools in improving club operations (e.g., CRM, analytics).
Leveraging social media and digital marketing for fan and member engagement.
Exploring the impact of AI, VR, and wearable technology on sports leadership.
Creating sustainable youth development programs
Establishing long-term strategic goals for organizational growth.
Interactive Leadership Workshop: Participants will develop a strategic plan for their organization based on real-life challenges.

Accreditation & Certification

The Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland (ALSS) is an international education institution  that  offers  continuing  education,  further  education,  and  post  graduate advanced  education  courses,  workshops  and  programs  focusing  on  advanced  studies in Leadership and Management. The ALSS also offers short courses that are not credit- bearing, and do not lead to formal qualifications. All attendees who attend for the Leadership in Sports Managment course will be awarded certificates of successful attendance by the ALSS.
